Documentation

This data package collects data from a wide variety of source datasets, primarily from the California Department of Education, and formats them for analyzing the finances of California school districts and the relationship of spending to student outcomes.

The processed data is organized into multiple files, with each record being obsevations for one California school district for one year. They key for the record is year and dist_code where dist_code is the county and district portions of the CDE code, formatted as an integer. ( ie, there is no leading zero.) These files are;

districts. Names, codes and number of charters for California districts.
student_demo. Student demographics, by district
test_scores. District mean test scores for demographies, for math, averaged between 8th and 11th grade.
cgr. College going rate
ced. Current expenses, adjusted for inflation and local cost of living.
school_finances. Distrct finances, from Census survey.

Caveats

These datasets have some very significant limitations:

Inconsistent time ranges. There is only 3 or 4 years of overlap, so most analyses that involve multiple files can only cover a short period.
Data is not recent. The outcome measures, test scores and college attendance, end in 2017 and 2018.
Significant supression. The College going file, in particular, has so many suppressed records that the descriptive statistics defy intuition.
